Son of John and Elizabeth (Wilson) Wayne. His father died when he was young. he went to work at 12 to help support the family. He worked on their farm in summer and in lumber camps in the winter. In 1872, the family moved to 50 acres near Bradford, MI. He served as Mount Haley Township supervisor [Midland Co.], 15 terms; chairman of the board of supervisors, 4 terms; member of the school board and postmaster of Bradford.
