Biographical Sketch:
Son of Garrett Graveraet and Charlotte Augusta (Kendrick) Stewart. At 17, he enlisted in company K, 22d Michigan Infantry Volunteers, where he remained until the regiment disbanded, July 11, 1865. On his return home he worked as a dockwholloper, loading lumber boats in Bay City. He then engaged as clerk in a store until 1867, when he began sailing, becoming master in 1876, and in 1879 he purchased an interest in a tug boat, becoming vice president and general manager of the Stewart transportation company. In 1900, he became a member of the Wayne County Canvassing Board; in 1907, he was named supervisor of school properties for the Detroit Board of Education, retiring in 1932, at 86. Member of the GAR, Sons of the American Revolution, the Masons, Knights Templar among others.
