Biographical Sketch:
Son of Wiepke and Hendrikje (Stegeman) Diekema. His family moved to Michigan in 1848. Admitted to the bar 1883; practiced in Holland, MI. Mayor of Holland, MI, 1895, member of the city board of education for many years; a trustee at Hope College; member of the board of directors of the State Pioneer Society. Bank president.

Notable Facts:
Speaker of the state House in 1889-90; member of the Spanish Treaty Claims Comm. from 1901 until he resigned in 1907; elected 4/27/1907, to the 60th Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Alden Smith; re-elected 61st Congress serving from 1908-1911; appointed U.S. Minister to the Netherlands by Pres. Hoover on 8/20/1929, serving until his death in The Hague, 1930.
