Biographical Sketch:
His father died when DeVere was aged 2. When a school aged he worked as a farm hand to contribute to his family and went to school in the winter. At age 17, he obtained a teacher's certificate, taught many years and became a principal. He studied law under D. P. Markey and was admitted to the bar in 1882 and practiced in Genesee Co.; then in West Branch before moving to Bay City. Prosecuting attorney for Ogemaw County from 1885-90. Was Great Lieutenant Commander of the Michigan Camp K.O.T.M, a mason, Templar, a member of the I.O.O.F., Modern Woodmen of the World, and Knights and Ladies of Honor.

Notable Facts:
Switched from the Republican to the Progressive party. Died from a fall from the 10th story of the Marie Antoinette Hotel in NY as he sat on the sill removing on shoes. Father-in-law of Congressman Woodruff.
