Of German ancestry. Son of Jacob and Mary (Powell)He enlisted in the 55th Ohio V. Infantry ; served up to the time of the veteran enlistment , when he re-enlisted as a veteran , again in the 55th , and served as a sergeant to the close of the war. After the Civil War, he farmed for 2 years in Steuben County, IN then moved to the Marshall, MI area. Three years later he returned to his homestead in Ohio. Nine years later he returned to Michigan, farming acreage in Riverton Township.
