Biographical Sketch:
Son of George E. and Rosena (Thomas) Houghton. In 1856, he came to Michigan with his parents, who settled on a farm in Gaines Township, Genesee County. Taught school for 6 winters, farming during the summer. In 1864, he enlisted in an Ohio regiment and served until the close of the Civil War. He held the offices of school inspector and township supervisor [five years].
