Biographical Sketch:
Son of Azariel and Mary (Andrews) Smith. His family moved to Michigan in 1839. He purchased a farm in spring 1865 in Somerset, MI. He was elected a member of the executive board of the State Agricultural Society in 1885, 1887 and 1889. He was known for raising quality cattle. He was an early supporter of Hillsdale College and served as a trustee for many years. He served as a member of the state prison board.

Notable Facts:
He was the third brother of his branch of the Smith family to represent Hillsdale county in the State Legislature. The elder brother, George A., served in the House of 1863-4 and in the Senate in 1867 and 1885; the younger brother, Legrand J., was a member of the House of 1873-4. Died of pneumonia and heart failure. 1891 Manual says he was born in Danbury; Reynolds' Compendium of History and Biography of Hillsdale County says Bethel, New Haven Co., CT.
