Son of Levi Grear and Asmath (Folsom) Whitney. Moved to a Saginaw Co., MI farm, 1868; began teaching at the district school at age 17, from 1876-87; taught for 7 winters. Began a hardware business in Merrill, 1886. Member of the board of ed for 18 years; president of the village several terms; village trustee, school inspector, township clerk; president of the State Bank of Merrill and director of the Bank of Hemlock; vice president of St. Louis Sugar Co. Member of County Committee for 20 years.
