Biographical Sketch:
Of Scottish ancestry. Son of John and Flora (McKinnon) McLeod. His family moved to Attica, MI in 1868; then to Sarnia, ON in 1880. In1882, he went to work in a grocery. He did construction work from 1888-91, employed on the St. Clair tunnel at Port Huron. He moved to Detroit in 1891, taking a position as street car conductor for the Citizens' Street Railway Company until 1895. For the next 5 years, he acted as business agent for streetcar employees. December, 1897, was elected traveling delegate for the Street Railway Employees' Association, and re-elected in December, 1898; from 1901-05, he was deputy labor commissioner. He became collector of internal revenue from 1907-14. He became associated with David Lupton's of Philadelphia, manufacturers of steel windows, etc. in 1908; an investor in 1914 and was eventually its state manager here. he was also director of the Detroit Life Insurance Co. and president and manager of the Detroit Safety Signal Co. [a device for automobiles.] In 1905, he was president of the National Association of Factory Inspectors. He was a member of the Detroit Board of Commerce. Member of the Knights of Columbus; Rotary, Detroit Golf Club and the Detroit Automobile Club.
