Biographical Sketch:
In 1850, his parents, Joseph Barney and Mary A. (Pickett) Reed, moved to Hanover Township, Jackson County, MI. In 1872, he purchased thirty acres of land, paying $ 100 down. Within 26 years he paid for the original farm, and an additional 240 acres in 3 separate farms, Mr. Reed was one of the most extensive dealers in sheep in south-central Michigan, and was for 2 years president of the National Merino Sheep Register Society. In 1895, he was elected township supervisor; re-elected in 1896 and 1897, and declined a fourth term in 1898; he was president of the Hanover Township Pioneer Association, and, for 3 years, president of the West Liberty Farmers' Club .
