Son of Reuben and Elizabeth Cooly. He moved to Prairie Ronde, MI in 1829. He was an amateur painter. He built a grist-mill with Erastus Bailey, in Kalamazoo, in 1836. He served as assessor (1833); postmaster (1841-49); commissioner of highways (1837); supervisor (1846). In 1850 he was living in Lafayette, Van Buren Co., MI
