Biographical Sketch:
Son of Rev. William & Elizabeth (Ford) Withington; of English descent. Moved to Jackson, MI, 1857, to manage a manufacturing business making farm implements. Commissioned Capt. 4/24/1861; made a colonel 8/1862 in the 17th Michigan Infantry--the Stone-wall Regiment. Made Brigadere General. Resigned commission in 1863 for family & business reasons. He was a colonel in the State militia from 1873 to 1879 and brigadier general from that time until his resignation in 1883. Trustee of the Michigan Insane Asylum at Kalamazoo. Became a Colonel in the 1st Reg. of militia.
Notable Facts:
Captain of the Jackson Grays, the 1st company to offer its services for the Civil War, becoming Co. B, 1st Reg. Michigan Volunteer Infantry. Taken prisoner & eventually exchanged 1/29/1862. For a time commanded the 1st Brigade, 1st Div. of the 9th Army Corps. Medal of Honor recipient for actions at Bull Run, July 1861.
