Biographical Sketch:
His parents, Lewis H. and Caroline (Edwards or Edmunds) Austin, were pioneers of Oakland Co. in 1836. At about age 20, he went to New York with the intention of becoming a blacksmith but soon enlisted in Co. E, 185 NY Volunteers; wounded in the head at Five Forks, 4/1/1865; reported dead. He found himself in a Washington, D.C. hospital and mustered out with his regiment May 30, 1865. He returned to Milford, where he operated his grocery business for 35 yrs. Illness forced his withdrawal from business in 1902. He was a member of the common council of Milford and a member of Heber Le Favour Post G. A. R. No. 181, was twice elected its commander and for 13 years has been its quartermaster. Member of the Masons.
