Biographical Sketch:
His parents, Charles and Mary Ann (Koeppel), emigrated from Germany to Ohio in 1854, his mother was Swiss. At age 20, he moved to Saginaw, MI, and secured employment as scaler of logs. The following year, he moved to Ontonagon, MI, where he was employed in saw milling. In 1898, he enlisted in the 35th Michigan, which was under Colonel Irish and was promoted to corporal. He was mustered out of service in 1899, and moved to Greenland, Ontonagon County.
