Son of Vital Alexander and Anna Jane Payant. He was member of the law firm McNiel, Payant, <ouw & Lori for 20 years before becoming a judge. He served as Iron Mtn city attorney, Breitung Twp School District attorney and village attorney for Niagra village , WI. He served as Dickinson County Circuit Court Judge from Dec. 28, 1982 thru Sept. 1, 2000 when he retired. Member of the Kiwanis; United Commercial Travelers; Jaycees; Knights of Columbus.

Notable Facts:
In 1991, selected as one of the 20 most respected judges in Michigan and in the top 5 in northern Michigan. Brother of Judge V. Robert Payant.
