Received his education in the local district school, the Ionia high school and the Michigan State College, from which he was graduated in 1920 with the degree of B. S. in agriculture.
Biographical Sketch:
Son of Herbert Ernest and Alice M. Powell. Member of Michigan state house of representatives, 1931-32, 1965-78 (Ionia County 1931-32, 89th District 1965-72, 88th District 1973-78); defeated, 1932; delegate to Michigan state constitutional convention from Ionia County, 1961-62. Member, Farm Bureau; Grange; American Legion; Delta Sigma Rho; Pi Kappa Delta. Died on his farm while feeding calves.
According to the Lansing State Journal, 12/21/75 after his defeat in 1931, he spent 26 years as a lobbyist for the Michigan Farm Bureau. Part of his activity was in developing grass-roots awareness of Lansing developments throughout the organization.
Notable Facts:
At the time of his retirement in 1978, he was the last World War I veteran in the Legislature. Member Michigan Dept of Transportation Hall of Fame & the Michigan's Farmer's Hall of Fame. 1st exhibited at the 1917 Michigan State Fair & served on the fair's board, 1944-64.
