Of Irish ancestry. Son of Edward and Joanna (Curtain?) Fitzgerald. His father came to America in 1830 from Limerick, Ireland. His parents died when he was young. He was adopted by Daniel Barton, Lyons, NY. At 19, he got his teaching certificate and taught for a few winters. Located in Grand Ledge, 1873. He worked as a traveling salesman selling hardware. Postmaster general of Grand Ledge, 1898-??. Clerk, Committee on State Affairs, 1893; member of the Grand Ledge school board, 1894-98; township clerk, 1876-78. Member, Grand Ledge School Board. Vice President, Grand Ledge Sewer Pipe Works. Member of the Masons, Knights of Pythias and Knights of the Maccabees.
