Education:
Common schools until age 17, Geneva Academy, Geneca, NY, studied medicine at the office of a country physician, attended lectures at Fairfield, Herkimer County, NY (graduated but no diploma due to his minority), received his diploma from the Medical Society at Penn Yan, Yates County (age 21).
Biographical Sketch:
The third son in a family of 10 children of Robert and Phoebe (Lewis) Wixom. After the death of his mother (1816) the family removed to Farmington, Oakland County, MI (1824). After his studies and marriage, Dr. Wixom opened a practice in Steuben County, NY and continued for four years. He bought land in Michigan and moved his family there in the fall of 1829. He had the largest practice in his section of the state. He removed to Argentine, Genesee County, MI and opened a new practice. From there he was called into neighboring states to preform difficult surgeries. He removed to Fenton in 1870. He educated over forty men in medicine and surgery. He was a Free and Accepted Mason and of Fenton Commandery, No. 14. He was as staunch Democrat.
Notable Facts:
At the breakout of the Civil War he aided General Stockton in raising a body of recruits called Stockton's Independent Regiment (16th Michigan Infantry) and served as its Surgeon. In June 1845 he preformed the first successful amputation of the hip-joint known in the US.
