Biographical Sketch:
Son of James Moag and Ellen Mary (Saunders) Scripps. Family emigrated to Rushville, IL, 1844., and grew up on a farm. He became a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, 1857. Settled in Detroit, 1859; managed the Detroit Tribune until 1873. At age 38 began the Evening News (later known as the Detroit News), 8/23/1873. 1844, active in the estab. of the Detroit Museum of Art; Donated his collection of "old masters" to it. Member if the Detroit Public Library Commission. Served as park commissioner.
