Biographical Sketch:
Son of Simeon and Lydia (Winslow) Van Akin. His family lived in the Tiffin valley before moving to Michigan. At 19, he enlisted in Co. C, 1st Regiment US Sharpshooters, Berdans. Shortly after the Civil War he married and moved to Ida Township in Monroe County to farm. He served as postmaster, township clerk, justice of the peace and as a member of the board of supervisors. Lived in Ida about 50 years.
