Son of Thomas and Grace (Austin) O'Dell. Shortly after their marriage, James and Catherine settled in Highland County, Ohio. James later served as a Captain in the Ohio Militia during the War 1812. They moved to Saint Joseph County, MI in 1831 and then, in 1832, to Penn, Cass County, MI, where James purchased the Old Carpenter grist mill, near Vandalia, the first mill built in Cass County. He was a member of the first constitutional convention of Michigan and served as supervisor [6 years], school inspector, collector, constable and highway commissioner.
