Biographical Sketch:
Son of John [or James] and Barbara (Kerr) Maitland. Emigrated to Canada with his parents in 1856. Emigrated to Negaunee. In 1864 and worked for the Iron Cliff Mining Co.. and for 13 years, he held the position of surveyor and engineer for the said company, and during most of the time he served as acting manager; was formally appointed to that position in the spring of 1880, and the following year was appointed general manager. In 1904, he was also manager of the Cambria and Lillie Mining Companies, general manager of the mining department of the Republican Iron and Steel Co. and had interests in 4 banks. He was a rodman in the survey of the Mineral branch of the Chicago and Northwestern. He was postmaster four years , and county surveyor two terms ; was mayor of the city of Negaunee.
