Biographical Sketch:
Of Scottish and English ancestry.Son of John A. and MaryAnn (Pegg) McMullen. He entered the printing trade at 14. He came to Bay City, MI in 1868, where he continued in the printing and publishing business. He purchased the Wenona Herald (later called the West Bay City Herald), in 1871, moving it to Bay City in 1872. He subsequently engaged in job printing at Bay City. In 1880, he purchased the Alpena Reporter and conducted it for 2 years. In 1882, he settled at Cheboygan, first connecting himself with the Democrat, but a year later he accepted a management position with the Cheboygan Tribune. He was elected mayor of Cheboygan, and re-elected in 1892 and 1898. In 1899, he left the paper to start his own printing business, producing stationery and general office supplies, known as the McMullen Printing Co. He served as mayor of Cheboygan from 1890-93; appointed postmaster in 1902-14. He was past grand chancellor of Michigan, Knights of Pythias and has filled all the prominent positions in the fraternal orders of the Ancient Order of United Workmen [A. O. U. W.] and Woodmen of the World, and was an active member of the Maccabees, the Elks and National Union

1900 USCen says he emigrated in 1882; Manual indicates he was 16 so 1868 would be the year. 1910 Census says 1868. Powers says his father's name was John A.; death certificate says Miles but mother's name matches.
