Biographical Sketch:
Son of Patrick and Margaret (Kiley) Monaghan. He had to wait a year to practice law after finishing his education because he was too young. He entered upon his duties as professor of Latin, Greek and mathematics in his Alma Mater, and at the same time served as principal of night schools under the direction of the Detroit Board of Education. He remained at Detroit college as one of its professors only two years , and having meanwhile commenced the study of law at the Detroit college of law. In 1897 he joined a practice that became known as Pound and Monaghan for 2 years. He then opened a practice with a cousin, Peter J. Monaghan. In 1917, he formed another partnership and the firm became Monaghan, Monaghan, O'Brien and Crowley.
He was attorney for the Detroit Employers' Association, general counsel for the National Founders' Association and the legal representative of the Winton Automobile Company, the Hugh Chalmers interests, the Royal Indemnity Company, the Massachusetts Bonding & Indemnity Company, the Hartford Insurance Company, the Automobile Insurance Corporation and others. He
was also the secretary and treasurer of the American Discount Corporation, a director of the Peninsular State Bank of Highland Park, president of the Taxicab Service Company and president of the Yellow Taxicab Co. Member of the Michigan and American Bar associations, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks and Detroit Athletic Club. Known for his gift of oratory from an early age.
Notable Facts:
In 1899, at the age of 24, was the youngest-ever member of the Michigan State Senate to that point.
Died of heart disease.
