Son of Dudley and Lucy (Backus) Woodbridge. Moved to OH, 1799; studied law in Marietta, OH then CT; admit. to OH bar, 1806; OH St. house of rep., 1807; prosecuting attorney in New London (now Washington) Co., OH, 1808-14; OH State Sen. 1808-14; moved to Detroit; collector of customs, Michigan Territory, 1814-29; appointed sec. of Michigan Territory 1814, served until appointed judge of Territory, 1828; elec. Deleg. 16th Cong., served 3/1819-8/1820, resigned. Held several Mich. offices. Retired to Spring Wells & devoted his time to horticulture.

Judge, MI Terr. Supr. Ct. 1828-32; del. to State const. conven., 1835; 2nd Gov. of Mich. 1840-41; US Sen. from 3/4/1841-3/3/1847. Elected to Mich. Sen. 1837. Lewis Cass was a fellow student in Marietta.
