Biographical Sketch:
Son of William J. & Johanna (Hoenstra) Smart. Taught for 1 yr in Kalkaska rural schools before becoming principal in Auburn Heights, 1926. Became superintendent of schools, 1929. Held many jobs in factories & on farms over time. Member of the Masons; Rotary Club. pres. of the Michigan Education Assoc.

Notable Facts:
(Lewis lists him as a Congregationalist) House Majority Leader 1971/72 & 1973/74. HCR 539, 1978 House Journal, p.7, indicated he had died. No date or place of death. Last residence was Indian River, Cheboygan Co., MI Political Graveyard gives place of birth as Kalkaska, MI. Living in the Sault at age 5. According to the Detroit Free Press he died in Daytona Beach, Florida on Wednesday, December 28, 1977.
