Of French extraction. His father may have emigrated at the same time as Cadillac. He was born on the family farm. He worked as an Indian trader for a time and often served as a translator and Indian agent. He was one of 3 judges for the first session of the Court of General Quarter held in Detroit on August 4, 1798, appointed in 1796. Delegate to Michigan state constitutional convention 1st District, 1835; supervisor of Hamtramck Township, Michigan, 1837-41, 1842;
