Biographical Sketch:
Son of James and Mary A. (Bennett) Turnbull. His father died in about 1852 and the family relocated to Elgin Co., Ontario. He moved in Chelsea, MI in 1858. Enlisted in Co. K, 20th Michigan Infantry in summer, 1862; final rank was lieutenant, in 1865. He entered normal school, in Ypsilanti, after the war Principal of the Memphis (MI) Union School for 3 years, 1868-71. He studied law with an attorney in Chelsea, MI and was admitted to the bar in 1871. Located in Alpena in 1872 to practice law. Lost election for circuit judge, 26th district. Lost election for state legislature, 1888. Elected Alpena city comptroller, 1875 and 1877; served on the Board of Supervisors for Alpena Co.
