Biographical Sketch:
Son of John Eastman. and Ester (Bagley) Janes. Enlisted in 4th Michigan Infantry Volunteers, 2/15/1863. Fought at the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, North Ann, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. Lost left arm in battle at Jerusalem Plank Road, VA, 6/22/1864. Discharged, 11/15/1864. Admitted to the bar, 1871. Served as city clerk [1871-76], city attorney [1872-76], alderman [1876-78], circuit court commissioner [1872-76] and probate judge [1876-84]. Served on staff of Gov. Russell Alger, 1885-86. Deputy commander of Michigan Grand Army of the Republic, 1883. National Inspector General of GAR, 1887. Deputy commander of Michigan Union Veteran's Union. Elected treasurer of Hillsdale Collee in 1984 and served for 4 years; also trustee and auditor [1894-?], of Hillsdale College. In 1885 he was paymaster general for the Michigan National Guard, with the rank of Colonel, for 2 years. He was US Pension Agent in Detroit 1897-??. Member: Oddfellows, Knights of Pythias, Maccabees, GAR, Michigan Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Elks and the US Grant Command of Detroit, Union Veterans' Union and Fellowcraft Club of Detroit. He held high positions in many of these societies.

Notable Facts:
Authored the bill requiring school buildings to fly the US flag and appropriated the funds to commission the statue of Gov. Blair. Find-a-Grave says he is buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Wyandotte; death certificate says he is buried in Hillsdale.
