Of English and Irish ancestry. Son of Richard and Ellen (Bailey) Mason. Located in Chicago, IL, 1848-52. Located in Masonville, 1852-59. Worked in father's lumber yard in Chicago, 1859-69. Returned to Masonville to enter lumber business, 1869. Managing partner, Davis & Mason lumber manufacturing firm. Served as supervisor of Masonville Township and mayor of Gladstone (1892-94). Member of Michigan state senate 30th District, 1895-98.
