Biographical Sketch:
Son of William and Frances (Munston) Maltby. Orphaned at three months of age. Adopted by family in Farmington, fall 1865 [P. Dean and Rhoda E. (Botsford) Warner]. Began work at father's general store, 1880. Became manager of store, 1886. As an early bicycle enthusiast, he won several championships. Served as village trustee and president. Member, Secretary of state of Michigan, 1901-04; Governor of Michigan, 1905-10. Member, Republican National Committee, 1920-23. He was a political reformer. In addition, he had cheese factories in Farmington and in Sanilac County. Member, Masons; Shriners; Knights of Pythias; Elks; Maccabees.
Notable Facts:
Governor of Michigan 1905-10. First MI governor to serve 3 consecutive terms.
For his day, he was the youngest senator ever elected and the youngest Secretary of State.
His adopted father P. Dean Warner, was a Speaker and a State Senator.
He advocated to establish the primary system and the end party 'machine' politics in Michigan.
