Biographical Sketch:
A lifelong resident of Detroit. He served on the Wayne County Board of Commissioners for 16 years. Served as historian of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus and was the assistant pastor at Northwest Unity Baptist Church. He was active in the NAACP, Concerned Citizens Council Youth Task Force and the Afro-American Museum of Detroit.
Notable Facts:
At age 21, was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives, serving from 1975-82.
Faced criticism before his appointment to chair of Appropriations. He was awaiting trial for campaign finance violations stemming from the 2004 election, (he allegedly did't file his required reports detailing his campaign funding & spending. He was charged with felony perjury relating to his post-election sworn statement. The attorney general charged him with a misdemeanor for failing to file two or more campaign finance statements on time.
