Biographical Sketch:
Served as mayor and alderman of Mason, MI. Son of John H. AND Lovinia [or Francis L.](Sherwood) Hemans His father was a blacksmith and farmer. The family moved to Oneida, Eaton County, MI when he was 11 months old. Three years later they moved to Mason. Upon graduation from high school in 1884, he taught school until 1887. He then began reading law with a judge before entering law school. After completing his course there he was elected circuit court commissioner for Ingham County and opened a law practice in Mason. He briefly practiced in Eaton Rapids with a partner before returning to Mason in 1890. Member of the Elks

Notable Facts:
Youngest mayor in the state when elected in 1891. Died of cancer at the Battle Creek Sanitarium
