Biographical Sketch:
Of English and French ancestry. Son of Milton and Maria (Chesbro) Holmes. He came to Hillsdale Co., MI in 1858. In 1861, he enlisted in the 7th Mich. Vol. Infantry, serving until honorably discharged due to physical disability. He taught school in Hillsdale and Jackson counties for 10 years, then engaged in mercantile business in Mosherville and Horton until 1884. He then moved to Remus, MI and operated a general store for 1 year. He then moved to Alma where he engaged in mercantile business and farming. After 3 years he sold the latter business and founded his agricultural machinery and carriage depository. He was treasurer and president of the Board of Education of Alma for several years and served twice as Mayor of that city. He was living with his daughter, Bessie, in Spring Arbor, MI in 1920.
