Biographical Sketch:
Son of Silas and Jane (Lee) Wells. He worked on a farm; in a woolen mill [3 years], and after coming west in 1873, clerked in the large store of the Iron Cliff Company in Negaunee. In 1887, he purchased the extensive mercantile department of the Iron Cliff company and continued in the business for 17 years. A fire destroyed the store in 1894 and he tried to rebuild during trying times in the area. He became involved with the Escanaba Land and Iron Co. He was on the county board of supervisors for 4 years. He was deputy revenue collector, 1881-84, and was employed in work connected with the State Tax Commission.
