Of Swiss ancestry. Son of Julius and Albertine (Adler) Stoll. He manufactured cigars until 1875 before moving on to insurance and real estate. He served as assistant city clerk from 1881-85; Wayne County Auditor from 1886-88; as a member of the Soldiers' Relief Commission, 1889-91 and Receiver of Taxes from July 1892-June 1898.
