Biographical Sketch:
Son of Michael and Mary Ann (Miley) Doherty. He move to Clare after graduating from school and worked all of the departments of a sawmill. In 1878, he became a clerk in a mercantile while studying to become a teacher. He taught for 3 years. While teaching, he opened an insurance office and iIn 1881, he started a hardware store. In 1892, he became involved with the Clare Woodenware Co. and was its general manager. He was active in the development of the Clare area and owned a farm there. He once held the position of president of the Farmer's Institute of Clare County and was president of the Clare Electric Light Co. He acted as local manager for the Michigan Bell Telephone Co.. He was a member of the local school board; the State Board of Agriculture, 1907-13; superintendent of the Michigan State Fair; Board of Trustees of Michigan State University from 1907-1919 and a Presidential Elector for Michigan in 1908. In 1920 and 1932, he was an alternate delegate to Republican National Convention from Michigan. In 1911, he became the owner of the Municipal Water, Light and Power Co. on Mackinac Island. He served as mayor of ClareMember of the Elks and the Knights of Pythias.
