Biographical Sketch:
He moved with his parents, W.H. and Anna (Palmer) Williams, to Berrien Co., in 1848 then to Cass Co. in 1852. He lived there until 1890 when he moved to Niles, MI. Enlisted in the 57th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers in 1861. He served under Gen. U.S. Grant at battles of Fort Donelson (2/11-2/16/1862) and Shiloh (4/6-4/7/1862). Served under Gen. John Logan in 15th Corps during Atlanta campaign(5/7-9/2/1864). On returning from the war he farmed and later became a general produce and livestock shipper. He was a member of the Chicago Produce Exchange and a wholesale commission merchant. While in Niles he engaged in several businesses involving: ice, coal, wood, implements and a carriage business. He moved to Niles in 1890. He served as alderman for the city of Niles and postmaster. Member of the Masons, the Knights Templar , the Ancient Order of United Workmen (AOUW) and of the Patricians.
