Biographical Sketch:
Emigrated to the US in 1849. Volunteered and was accepted to serve in the Civil War in 23rd. Regiment, MI Volunteers Co. H in place of his father who got drafted. Enlisted at age 18, marching with Gen. Sherman. After the war he worked the farm in summer,taught school in winter until he entered State Normal College in fall of 1870, graduated in 1873 and received MA from U of M in 1877. Became superintendent of schools in Ithaca, Alma and Howell and was superintendent of the Lansing school for the blind for 1 year. He was editor and publisher of the Livingston Republican, purchased in 1889 (consolidated with the Livingston Press in 1938) and served as vice president of the First State and Savings Bank in Howell. He served on the first Board of Township Library Commissioners, elected in 1903;
