Biographical Sketch:
He studied law in his hometown and was admitted to the bar. In 1823 he went to Virginia as a private teacher, remaining there until 1826 when he went to Mississippi. A yellow fever outbreak caused him to migrate again that year to Ann Arbor, MI. After purchasing and clearing land there, he began practicing law in 1827. He was judge of probate 1828-36; on the Legislative Council of the Territory 1830-33 and on the Judicial Committee of the constitutional convention. In 1831 he was a trustee of the University, 1832-38 and regent from 1852-58. He was 2nd mayor of Ann Arbor.
