He came to White Pigeon, MI, in 1830, where he remained until the county seat was removed to Centreville, when he erected the first residence there. In 1838 he left Michigan with his wife and daughter and with an ox team traveled to Oregon Territory, where he arrived in Sept of 1838. At the crossing of the Missouri River he was elected to the command of emigrating company, consisting of 84 wagons, the command terminating at Ash Hollow.
He found a provisional government established in Oregon. In 1847 he was appointed Supreme Judge of Oregon, which he held until Congress organized the territory and appointed judges.
He was a regent of the University of Washington at Seattle in 1862; connected with the Puget Sound & Columbia River Railroad project in 1862
He resided at Vancouver, Washington Territory, in 1887.
