Of Scottish ancestry. His father died when he was 7 and he was bound out to a farmer for 7 years. He went to Salt Lake City in 1849. When he returned in 1853 he bought a farm in Brant Township, Saginaw Co., MI He helped organized Brant Township. He held 7 township offices.
