Engaging Students in Meaningful Math Using Games
Games are an effective way to engage students in learning. Games not only provide a context for learning mathematical content but also an opportunity to practice the kind mathematical thinking that is addressed by the Common Core State Standards – Mathematics (CCSS-M) “Standards for Mathematical Practice” (SMP). However, play is only the start of learning. Without intentional teaching, the learning opportunities associated with game playing can be lost. In this workshop, participants will experience how to support the development of K-8 mathematicians through purposeful play and intentional instruction. Be prepared to learn some new games and develop lesson scenarios that you can use in your classroom.
