Biographical Sketch:
born on a farm near Beloit, WI; removed in 1867 to Grand Rapids to become principal of Coldbrook Union School and member of Grand Rapids Board of Education, 1867. Co-founded Michigan Horticultural Society and served as its first secretary. Located in Whitehall to engage in mercantile and lumber business, 1876. Put out 100 acres of apple and cherry trees on the pine barrens, as an experiment, using clay in the setting, which he calls "clay culture." Served one term as village president. Member, Michigan House of Representatives from Muskegon County 2nd District, 1893-96.

Invented lumber trimming and assorting machine, US Patent #378,796; Slab-sawing machine, US Patent #411,922; Dovetail-joint-closing machine, US Patent #411,923; Cut-off sawing-machine, US Patent #411,925; Lumber-joining machine, US Patent #661,542; Lumber-joining machine, US Patent #827,738. Constructed own boat, the "Bertelle."
