Son of Leander and Cynthia (Selleck) Mellen. Located in Macomb County, 1837. Became surveyor in Upper Peninsula in 1840, working for Judge William A. Burt until township lines were completed. Appointed U.S. Deputy Surveyor in 1848, surveying in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Became a resident of Bruce Twp, Macomb Co. in 1848. Served as supervisor for 4 years.
