Biographical Sketch:
Son of John and Mary (Meyers) Wachtel. From his 17th to 23d years he was engaged as a telegraph operator at a number of important points . The principal ones where he was placed by the companies were Crestline, Columbus, Xenia and Cincinnati, in Ohio, and Fort Wayne, IN. The next 5 years he was one of the proprietors of the Wachtel House ( hotel ) at St. Marys, PA. He located in Petoskey, 1878 to establish northern Michigan's first bank, which he operated for 8 years. Village president of Petoskey, MI, 1885-86. Fusion candidate for secretary of state of Michigan, 1886. Mayor of Petoskey, MI, 1900-01. Democratic candidate for Presidential Elector for Michigan, 1900. Democratic candidate for Michigan state senate 29th District, 1910. Alternate delegate to Democratic National Convention from Michigan, 1912.
