Served as Deputy U.S. Collector of Revenue, Mecosta County treasurer for three terms, township treasurer; postmaster of Newaygo; city treasurer and mayor of Big Rapids. Member, Michigan Republican State Central Committee, 1876. Auditor General of Michigan, 1879-81, 1881-83. Member, Michigan House of Representatives from Mecosta County, 1895-96. Member, Michigan Senate 25th District, 1897-1900. He removed to Oregon.
