Biographical Sketch:
Son of Dr. J. E. and M. (Burlingham) Davis who died in 1872 of a disease he contracted while serving as surgeon in the 27th Michigan Infantry. George became a shipping clerk in the wholesale oil house M.V. Bently 1874-75. He joined his brother in the real estate and insurance business at Oxford, MI. A year later he became city salesman for Perrin & Bentley, wholesale oil dealers, in Detroit. For 2, years he was city salesman and traveling man for this firm, leaving them to travel for the music firm of R. D. Bullock, Detroit. While in this business, he traded a second-hand piano for some oak timber in Macomb county, leading to the manufacture of hardwood lumber at only 22, in company with Henry Oellrich, of Detroit, Davis furnishing the muscle and Oellrich the cash. He bought out his partner 2 years later. He organized Utica Hoop and Lumber Company, 1890; organized Detroit Sand and Gravel Company; Vice president of both companies. In 1898, he organized the Detroit, Utica & Romeo Railway Co. Member of the Knights Templar

Notable Facts:
Men of Progress report Miss Marion's maiden name as St. John, daughter of S.P. St. John. Grandson of Judge Calvin Davis, who served in the Legislature in 1845. Served in both chambers. Member of the "Immortal 19" Died in the Eastern Michigan Asylum, Pontiac, of 'organic brain disease and paresis.
