    Biographical Sketch: 
    Son of Ransom and Theresa M. (Douglas) Shelden.  His father was a Michigan copper mining pioneer. Located in Houghton County, 1847.  Enlisted in Company I, 23rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 1/8/1862.  Commissioned as captain, 9/12/1862. Served as village president, township supervisor and member, Houghton County board of supervisors.  He was in the drug business for 6 years before becomin a manager for the Portage Lake Foundry for 18 years.  he left there to become superintendent of the Shelden & Shafer Iron Co. in Crystal Falls.  After 4 years, he returned to Houghton upon his father's death.  Member of the Masons.
