Biographical Sketch:
Son of William and Mary (Stork) Smith. Enlisted in Company H, 1st Michigan Infantry for three months, 1863. Located in Houghton County, 1863. Worked on railroad construction project in Minnesota, 1869-71. He later became a clerk for the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co., 1871-1915. Vice president, First National Bank of Lake Linden. Director, Northern Michigan Building and Loan Association of Hancock. Served as Torch Lake Township supervisor, 1889-1915. Director of the Northern Building and Loan Assoc. of Hancock.

Notable Facts:
Served in both chambers. Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriations and Finance, 1906. Chairman, State Republican Convention, 1907. Death certificate gives place of death as Torch Lake, the doctor signing the certificate was from Lake Linden.
