Biographical Sketch:
Son of William and Mary (Stork) Smith. Enlisted in Company H, 1st Michigan Infantry for 3 months, 1863. Located in Houghton County, 1863. Worked on railroad construction project in Minnesota, 1869-71. He later became a clerk for the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co., 1871-1915. Vice president, First National Bank of Lake Linden. Director, Northern Michigan Building and Loan Association of Hancock. Served as Torch Lake Township supervisor, 1889-1915. Director of the Northern Building and Loan Assoc. of Hancock.
